The Milkman Delivers Big

Jarod Milko

Jarod "the Milkman" Milko may not sound like the most imposing welterweight fighter around, but he's a name you'll want to remember. The amatuer mixed martial arts athlete has been climbing up the ladder, with his biggest victory coming on April 24th when he took out fightforce Welter weight champion Jay Broaden of Missoula Montana. Broaden an undefeated with 6 fights was heavily favored.

The Milkman has been making waves of his own, winning his previous 3 fights and going into the fight with a record of 4w,2l. This was by far the biggest fight of his career with a few set back leading up to the bout. 4 weeks prior to the fight Jarod took a knee to the head in training leaving him with 11 stiches and the possibility of a fight that would never happen.

Leave it to the Milkman, to come back after a week's rest and a full load of final exams for the univeristy student, as the biggest fight of his life approached. Well, some how he was able to juggle the schedule and give a very hard three weeks of training his best in preparation for the fight.

Jay Broaden

Finally the night of the fight, the Main event featuring Kenora Ontario native Jarod Milko against FightForce Welter weight Champion Jay Broaden in a non-title fight. The first round starts and the Harve crowd goes wild. The two fighters square off as Broaden throws out a jab, Milko immediately attacks with a heavy right hand of his own sending Broaden back. Eventually the two scramble to the ground. A very technical battle ensues as Jarod takes side control and works his way to mount. Almost as quickly as Milko get's mount, Broaden reverses it. Another scramble takes place as Milko ends up face down on his hands and knees. Broaden fights to get Milkos back, instead Milko rolls and Broaden finds himself in a position in which he has often stopped many of his previous opponents, the mount. From the mount he's able to land a few hard hammer fists but Milko does an excellent job of protecting himself. The bell rings!

Round number 2 starts with Milko landing a few hard punches and shooting in for a takedown. He get side mount and has good control of Broaden. Broaden, not cofortable, rolls to his stomach. Jarod wraps his arms and feet around Broaden like a python within a few seconds the undefeated champion is tapping out. Winner by Rear Naked Choke: Jarod "Milkman" Milko.

What's next for Milko? His manager and trainer is quick to say "We are working on a rematch with Broaden for the title" if all goes well "Milko will be a pro in a few months." The promoter of Fight Force, Brian has been contacted and "we are hoping that we will be able to get Jarod a title fight in the next few months."

The other two Lethbridge fighters competing on the show where Jesse Dayrider a middle weight fighter making his mma debut against Idaho's Justin Bradfield, a fighter with 8 fights to his credit. Jesse fought an excellent fight weathering the storm in the first round to come out with a thunderous Knock out in the second round.

Dan Romolliwa was the third fighter. He too had an impressive performances controlling the majority of the fight with some excellent punches and kicks, In the second round he got caught in a guillotine choke and was forced to tap.

All in all a great night with quite possibly the KO of the night and submission of the night Team PFA looked amazing.

Both Dan and Jesse will be competing May 15th in Helena, Montana and then again in Calgary on June 4th.

PFA - TOKYO COWBOY RETURNS WITH VENGEANC

Hide It's been roughly three years since Hidetomo Fujii took to the ring and fought in a Muay Thai event. The welterweight has focused his efforts to
becoming a complete Thai Boxer over the last few years and has become an integral part of Team PFA. Being the selfless person that he is, Hide, has also dedicated a large part of his time and efforts to help develop other athletes at PFA. Hide's desire to compete was still burning strong in his heart, but as with many fighters, life can get in the way. A combination of work, school, family and relationships can be a lot for a competitive athlete to juggle around. No matter how busy Hide became he still made time to train and help others at PFA.

The one word that would describe Hide is "Perfection". Hide trains at a higher level and with more intensity than most fighters. His commitment to perfection can be seen in his training and he desire to help others gain that same level in their own training. Many fighters who lose their first fight will pack their bags and quit training altogether or they will beg their coaches to get them in the ring as soon as possible. Either of these choices was not in Hide's character. Hide decided to learn from the fight and discover what he did wrong, and more importantly, what he did right. Hide then dedicated himself for the next three years to every little detail necessary for him to become the quality fighter that he desired to be. Hide realized that to become a top athlete he would need to dedicate a large part of his time and energy towards that goal. The dedication and efforts over the past three years paid off greatly.

On Saturday May 15, 2010, the fight fans at Helena Havoc witnessed the return of the Tokyo Cowboy. Hide is not one to take an easy fight, but always trying to push to limit. Hide, with a record of 0 wins and 1 lose, accepted a fight with a far more experienced fighter. Ryan Fuss is an tough experienced mixed martial arts fighter with a record of 8 wins and 1 loss. Toughness is nothing new to Ryan Fuss. Fuss trains at the Hel-Town Hybrid MMA school. The head trainer at Hel-Town is Brett Hamil, who is also the the personal trainer of UFC former light heavyweight champ Chuck Liddell. Hide was not only going to fight the hometown athlete, but a more experienced fighter with world class trainers in his corner.

Hide kept composed through out the fight controlling each round with his powerful cut kicks to nullify the lethal punching combinations of Fuss. Hide took some powerful shots as round one opened, which was not a surprise from a fighter of Fuss' caliber. It might of been the three punch combination to the head or a few stiff jabs to the nose, but something awoke in Hide. The training took over and every time Hide was caught with a strike he would have an answer. Hide's clinch proved to be stronger than Fuss Hide's experience with Judo and Muay Thai training really showed off his skills in the clinch. The third round began with Fuss coming out hard and throwing combination after combination. For over 30 seconds Fuss was landing powerful shots on Hide. This was looking like the end of Hide's comeback fight. Hide would not give up and answered the flurry by Fuss by finishing the round with powerful hand combinations and a heavy cut kick that would have crippled any lesser opponent.

After the fight was done the two warriors stood awaiting the final results. Judge 1 scored the bout 30 to 27 for Hide. Judge 2 scored the bout 29 to 28 Fuss. Judge 3 scored the bout 30 to 27 for the winner by split decision...

GARGOYLE BOYLE - CRACKED NOT BROKEN

Historically gargoyles have clung lifelessly to Gothic Architecture, but in more recent times they’ve taken on much darker roles – they’ve become protectors trained to defeat anything naive enough to face them.
Derek ‘The Gargoyle’ Boyle, 25, of the Progressive Fighting Academy is determined to prove the loss he suffered to Josh Machan of Red Deer, was pure luck. Machan defeated Boyle on April 24, in Lloydminster in front of a full house. Machan trains under UFC’s Jason “The Athlete” McDonald, and is known for having a lethal ground game.

Brad Wall is the head coach of PFA where Boyle trains and says that he expected a good fight. “Like McDonald we expected Machan to be tough on the ground. Derek was well prepared for the fight unfortunately sometimes it takes more than prep it takes a bit of luck to win fights,” says Wall.

But luck wasn’t on Boyles’ side and although Boyle had a dominating ground game and stand up game, Machan came out victorious. Boyle dominated in the first round of the fight and started the second round in with the same energy, after mounting his opponent the win seemed moments away. Machan turned the fight around suddenly by using a kimura on Boyle and rolling him.
The crowd was shocked, but nobody could have been more astonished than Boyle and Wall. Machan and McDonald have been in situations like this before and proven that Machan is not an average fighter, but deadly from any position. Machan is on a four-fight winning streak, but Boyle is adamant on a rematch and soon.

“I’ve contacted the promoter of the Evolution Fight Club as well as Machan’s coach Jason McDonald to stir up a rematch. Derek won’t be sleeping good at night until he gets a second shot at this match, he believes he should have won and will when they meet again,” says Wall
“We are hopeful that Josh and Jason will take a rematch at the next Evolution in August, but Derek will take a rematch in Red Deer the next Pure Show,” adds Wall.

Main Event:
The phrase "Main Event" is something every fighter dreams about. The "Main Event" is something special that is held for those fighters who have worked extremely hard to get to the top. Often this means the fighters have won and lost many battles and taken countless bumps and bruises to get there name on that poster. To be the "Main Event" this means that the fans are coming to see these fighters fail or succeed. For the hometown fighter the energy from the crowd can be a huge edge for a fighter. Having the roar of the crowd behind you can give those fighters the drive and determination to win at all costs. For the visiting fighter going up against not only another fighter, but having to compete against an army of fans that are there to see the visiting fighter obliterate by the hometown hero.

On Friday June 4th, Derek "The Gargoyle" Boyle will step into the cage against Aaron Armstrong in Calgary at Hard Knocks fighting Championship 7. Armstrong, being a Calgary fighter, could be called the Hard Knocks poster boy. Armstrong is an undefeated fighter with 3 wins and zero loses in his pro career. Armstrong is an excellent wrestler and being undefeated will be a huge hurdle for Boyle to undertake. Boyle is a superb striker, but does Armstrong's wrestling pose a threat to Boyle's chances? In mixed martial arts, wrestlers dream about taking on a striker. They train for the moment a striker attempts a punch, kick or knee in hopes of a quick takedown or crowd pleasing slam. Boyle on the other hand is well aware of Armstrong's ability and is no doubt training very hard to defend against it. Yet, some may still wonder how a fighter with a 50/50 professional record and limited wrestling training will go on to defeat such a dominant and undefeated wrestler?

Trainer Brad "The Brick" Wall said, "Derek's striking is a level many mixed martial artists dream of having." Derek had a very good boxing base, something he began training in when he was a teenager in Sparwood, BC. The MMA star would then join the Progressive Fighting Academy in Lethbridge as an adult and began to work on his mma under North American MMA champion Trevor Hardy and time World Muay Thai champ Brad "The Brick" Wall. Boyle also took on Anderson Goncalves, a Brazilian Jui Jitsu 3rd Degree Black Belt, as his ground coach. With the combination of Trevor Hardy, Brad "The Brick" Wall and Anderson Goncalves training "The Gargoyle" the improvements in his fight game improved immensely. Has it guaranteed success? No, that's the difficult thing, it doesn't.

Boyle being the type of person he is, is continually looking to better himself. In February of 2010, trainer Brad “The Brick” Wall presented Derek the opportunity to travel to New Mexico for a week and train with a world class gym at Greg Jackson’s. Boyle jumped at the chance to experience the level of training he would have to do to compete at the world class level. Numerous fighters from UFC, WEC, Strikeforce and other high level promotions come to prepare for upcoming fights. If you can hack it with them you can make it to the top.

Boyle not only handled the training at Jackson’s he made arrangements to come back for 4 weeks in May to prepare for the upcoming fight Hard Knocks Fighting Championship. He survived hours of brutal wrestling sessions with fighter like Clay Guida and sparring daily with vicious strikers like Carlos Condit and Melvin Guillard. This is how a “the Main event” fighter prepares for the fight. Boyle was not content to be the best fighter at the gym and dish out beatings to lesser experienced fighter, but to ensure that he trained with fighters who were better than himself and put himself to the test. Surviving three a day training sessions with some of the best fighters in the world is the only way for Boyle to strive to be the best.

“As Derek’s trainer, I m really proud of him and the amount of dedication he’s put into his training. I’m really looking forward to seeing how this (training at Greg Jackson’s) has helped him mentally focus and prepare. I know the guys at the gym are excited to learn some new tricks, but most of all they are excited to have a big part of the team back.” said Wall.
Derek “The Gargoyle” Boyle will have the results of his hard training on display in Calgary on June 4th. The Knocks fighting Championship 7 and its fans will have a chance to witness something special as Aaron Armstrong tangles with Derek “The Gargoyle” Boyle.
